The season of appetite has arrived! From late October to early May, the Seto Inland Sea coast near Himeji Castle is in peak oyster season. After exploring the castle, why not enjoy freshly grilled or raw oysters and other seafood delicacies at a charming seaside oyster hut?

Deep Himeji Stories: Michael Bobroff from California Discover Castle and Ramen

We had the pleasure of guiding Mr. Michael Bobroff from California 🇺🇸.
Starting from Castle View, we walked through Shikama-tsu Gate and Naka-no-mon Street, heading toward the Karo Yashiki Park. On the way, we had the incredible luck of meeting Mr. Kazuya Haga, a pioneer of Himeji tourism, dressed as a samurai 🏯⚔️. Michael was delighted to take a photo together 📸.

As a social studies teacher who had lived in Rome for many years, Michael brought deep insights into castle strategy. He compared the defense and attack systems of Roman fortresses with Himeji Castle’s layout, showing great fascination with its tactical design. We also discussed Japanese history in depth, including the relationship between Lord Terumasa Ikeda and Nobunaga Oda, as well as the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute 📖.

Later, we explored the castle from viewpoints not usually seen on regular tourist routes, before wrapping up the day with a delicious bowl of ramen at Zundoya 🍜.

Michael mentioned he hopes to return next spring 🌸, and I look forward to guiding him through an even deeper journey into Himeji and the Harima region next time 😊.
